Ecological Solutions: Human-Bear Conflict
We chose one topic out of five topics (for example Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Mega Fires in the West) and I chose Human-bear conflict.
We researched our topics to learn more about the issues. We then provided Three-point Management Plans to solve our problems.
My three solutions are
1. Setting up diversion feeding sites what basically means that we feed the bears so they don't break into the city anymore to get food out of our trash cans.
2. Providing bear- proof trash cans for every household and every business in La Plata County. A law will be set-up so that persons who fail the law have to pay 500$. This is the strongest part of my Management Plan because it is really simple and once the trash cans are installed, the City does not have to worry and pay for the conflict anymore so at the end it saves money.
3. Installing electric fences around the bears' natural habitat, the bears will get shocks of 2 Joules but this will only keep them away from the fences for a couple of hours, then they will come back to try again.
During this project, I developed skills, for example creatind a realistic Budget and a Timeline in Excel, making in-text citations from researched Scholarly Articles.
I learned about the role bear play in the ecosystem, for example they eat the seeds of pine and poop them out again, that helps growing new pine trees. They also keep the population of fishes on a good level because they eat them.
