Religion: A Messed -up Part of Human Civilization
During the course of this project, we learned about different religions and how they are really similar to each other, but we did not talk nor learn about conflicts that are caused by religion, even though there has been many of them in the past. They are happening right now, and, at the moment it looks like, there will be religious conflicts in the future. Why did the Crusades happen, why did 9/11 happen, why are Western and Eastern people in Afghanistan dying every single day? Because of religion. Religion was and is the cause of some of the evil and pain that is happening in the world. It forces its beliefs on the people; these beliefs are often old- fashioned and/ or misunderstood.
To make the above- mentioned aspect of religion visible, I first of all recycled an old canvas by painting over it which also created texture. After that, I punched through the canvas and made other cuts with scissors. I sewed part of the pieces back on the canvas and made it look messed- up. I then, drew symbols of rather known world religions on the canvas.
The symbols obviously represent the different religions, while the messed up canvas shows how messed up (because of aforementioned reasons) religion is. Different religions often have rituals, prophets, Gods, and beliefs in common- the so- called monomyth is being found. I wanted to show that aspect of religion, as well- by somewhat sewing pieces of the canvas back together. By sewing the pieces together, I also wanted to show that there is still hope that religious conflicts come to an end.
